How Jesus Became God
How did Jesus, an apocalyptic Jewish preacher, come to be called God? This Easter, we’ll explore the historical transformation of Jesus' identity, drawing from Bart Ehrman’s How Jesus Became God. From end-times prophet to divine figure, we’ll trace how his followers’ experiences -- visions, scriptures, and shifting beliefs -- reshaped history. What can this story teach us about the human search for meaning, transcendence, and truth? In our Unitarian Universalist tradition, where beliefs differ yet values unite, we’ll reflect on resurrection, transformation, and the ways we make meaning from life, death, and whatever may lie beyond.
Bob Clegg is a member of All Souls Waccamaw UU. He holds an M.Div. degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. He serves as worship coordinator for ASWUU and volunteers at ECHO (Eastern Carolina Housing Organization). Next month, he and his friend Tom will embark on a seven-week cycling trip from Paris to the Black Sea. Bob and his wife Connie live near Conway SC, where they are currently plotting whether their next pet will be a cat or a dog (or both!).
