How We Built the Europa Clipper
Guided by our fifth UU source, which counsels us "to heed the results of science," this Sunday's presentation will feature a one-on-one conversation with Jackie Perry, an engineer with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, about how NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft was put together. Clipper is now on its way to Jupiter, where it will insert into an elliptical orbit and make 49 close flybys of the Galilean moon Europa. The mission is focused on learning about Europa's ice shell, the underlying ocean of liquid water, and its chemistry and geology. Jackie is now working on NASA's Dragonfly project, which is targeted to launch in 2028 for a mission to Saturn's moon Titan, with the prospect of hopping around helicopter-style to explore the surface and study the ocean that lies beneath.
Jackie Perry is an engineer with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. She lives in Ellicott City, MD with her husband Jay who is an artist and graphic designer, and their precocious daughter Evelyn.
