Ghost Stories: Fun, Fear, and the Human Spirit

Sunday, October 26, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Part of the series Why We Read: Using Fiction to Make Sense of Our World, this talk turns to one of our oldest and most enduring forms of storytelling: the ghost story. On the Sunday before Hallowe'en, we'll explore their spiritual depth and psychological power, while also enjoying their playful side.

From Hebrew scripture to Stephen King, writers have long used the supernatural to simultaneously unsettle and entertain. Join us to discover why ghost stories continue to haunt, challenge, and delight countless generations.

The Rev. Paula Clegg Morton is Rector Emeritus of Transfiguration Episcopal Church in Saluda, NC. Rev. Morton is also a retired Navy chaplain, a compulsive reader, and a slightly less compulsive writer. Her fiction has appeared online and in print, including Every Day Fiction, Nomad, and Cricket Magazine. She is currently compiling a collection of thirteen stories for a book titled This Book Eats People, which she hopes to publish under the pseudonym Blue Jay Pie.

Paula and her husband, the Rev. John Morton, have raised five dogs and two humans, and are currently attempting to civilize a sixth dog. The jury is still out on this one.

In view of the theme, "Fun, Fear, and the Human Spirit," congregants are welcome to come dressed in their Hallowe'en costumes if they so choose.

The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. For those who wish to participate remotely, our services are available on Facebook both in real time and subsequently as recordings. Go to the ASWUU Facebook page and click the Live link.

We have a coffee hour after each service, during which the coffee and conversation are always rich. You may bring a dish or snack to share if you would like to do so.
