Prepare for Tomorrow, Today!

Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM

We wait today for all the things that could happen under the new administrations for our nation and for our state. We don’t know exactly what’s coming. But we can prepare today for those tomorrows. One possibility for SC is working toward Medicaid expansion in SC. At the SC UU Justice Alliance (SCUUJA) Fall Festival, some of us heard from the Rev. Lisa Garcia-Sampson about how they achieved this in NC even with a Republican supermajority. Sue Berkowitz from SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center also spoke about the ways SC is preparing to work on Medicaid expansion in SC with the organization Cover SC. I’ve been attending Cover SC meetings, and I am heartened by what I hear. I will share some strategies and some ways we can live our values today as we prepare for what’s next.

Rev. Dr. Jean Heriot (she/her) is a UU community minister and member of Aiken UU Church. She co-founded SCUUJA with the Rev. Dr. Pippin Whitaker in 2021 and serves as their Director of Training and Organizing. She taught religion, sociology, and anthropology at Santa Clara University, California, and at Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska, before retiring from teaching in 2020. She then returned home to South Carolina and lives in North Augusta near her sister and nephews.  As a South Carolina native, Rev. Dr. Jean has an intimate knowledge of the legacy of racism in SC and a theological commitment to the see-think-act model of transformative development. She also nurtures her creative side with oil painting and has joined a studio in Aiken.

The service will begin at 11am. The service will be available on Facebook Live for those who wish to participate remotely. Go to the ASWUU Facebook page and click the Live link.

We have a social hour after the service for coffee, snacks and conversation. You may bring a dish to share if you would like to do so.
