Refugee Resettlement and Rehousing
Donna Wages and Sue Yarber from Lutheran Services Carolinas will present on their projects for resettling and rehousing refugees from other countries, including descriptions of volunteer opportunities and other ways to support this vital work.
Millions of people worldwide have been forced to flee their home countries due to their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Many have to live in designated refugee camps or move from place to place seeking shelter for years, even decades. While getting here is difficult, it accounts for only part of their journey. LSC’s New Americans Program welcomes New Americans to our country and helps them on their journey to self-sufficiency through the work of Circle of Welcome teams. LSC offers these programs in seven municipalities in North and South Carolina, including Myrtle Beach. This is a wonderful opportunity for groups to engage in the work of welcome.
Donna Wages is the Community Engagement Coordinator for Lutheran Services Carolinas, New Americans Program. Donnas’ background in Client Services and Volunteerism make her great at helping people find fulfillment as they volunteer. And she is excited to work with us!
Sue Yarber holds a Bachelors of Social Work from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. She has extensive experience as a job coach, social worker, and advocate and provider of services for people who are homeless and in recovery. She also pastored a church, served as a chaplain, and taught English as Second Language (ESL). She now trains volunteers to provide ESL and Cultural Orientation services in the New Americans Program at Lutheran Services Carolinas.
